Connie Johnson

Meet Connie

Connie Johnson is a native Oklahoman and lifelong Democrat running to be Oklahoma’s 29th Governor, and the first Black Indigenous woman governor in the United States.

A product of Oklahoma’s public schools, Ivy League and HBCU educated, she served as Senate legislative staff for 23 years and as a state senator representing Oklahoma’s largest minority district for 9 years until her departure in 2014 when she made history as Oklahoma’s first African/Indigenous American and woman to win a statewide nomination. As a senator she fought for women’s rights to equal pay, equal justice and reproductive health services; sentencing reform and abolishing the death penalty; small and minority business inclusion in government contracting; Veterans; people with disabilities; and child and family well-being. She continued her ongoing advocacy against the death penalty in Oklahoma as chair of the Oklahoma Coalition to Abolish The Death Penalty, where she led the effort to keep the death penalty out of Oklahoma’s Constitution. As former Oklahoma Democratic Party vice chair and Oklahoma’s only Bernie Sanders superdelegate in a state he overwhelmingly won, she diversified the ODP Central Committee and developed programs to empower and guarantee everyone’s participation in government and voting.

Senator Johnson introduced Oklahoma’s first ever medical cannabis bill in 2007, during Oklahoma’s Centennial Year. Although introduced amidst much legislative and public condemnation, she reintroduced the bill every session during her tenure. The people of Oklahoma, through her leadership, overwhelmingly approved medical cannabis legalization in 2018, an action that has led Oklahoma to the point of being recession proof as the cannabis industry epicenter.

Connie’s current cannabis policy reform work has expanded to promote policies related to hemp in Oklahoma’s predominant agriculture industry.

With more than 40 years of public service, Connie Johnson knows and is ready to do the work required to fight for every day Oklahomans! Let’s Go Together!
